The Departmental profile
The Bengali department of LCB College offers UG courses along with the Higher Secondary course. In the two years course of Higher Secondary, students having Bengali MIL can choose Advance Bengali as a general subject. At the UG level, students can study Bengali general subjects like RC, CC, SEC. The Department has two sanctioned posts. LCB College included Bengali as one of the MIL subjects from the beginning (1971). The department ran in the evening with one temporary teacher appointed for pre-university classes. The undergraduate section of the department was started in 1973.
Mrs. Papari Sengupta (M.A.) was appointed as the permanent teacher of the department on the 23rd of July, 1975. Mrs. Anusuya Chakraborty joined the department as second teacher in 1982, but she worked for a short duration. Dr. Sunanda Das (M.A. double, B.T. Ph.D.) who was working in Debicharan Girls’ College at Jorhat joined the department in 1984. She retired from the post as HOD in 2008. Mrs. Shibani Dey (M.A) was appointed under non- sanctioned category in 1993. She later filled the permanent vacancy created after the retirement of Mrs. Papari Sengupta. After the retirement of Dr. Sunanda Das in 2008, Mrs. Shibani Dey held the post of HoD as the senior most teacher. In 2012 Dr. Surjyasen Deb (M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., NET) joined the department. But in 2019 Dr. Surjyasen Deb joined Radhamadhav College, Silchar and one (1) post of Bengali department became again vacant.
Student’s enrollment of Bengali department is very low, so the teachers can devote personal attention to each student. The Bengali department has its own library. Apart from books sourced from the Central Library, the Department procures personal reference books, text books & other course related reference books. The alumni of the department have also donated course related text and reference books. From time to time the college authority allots money for buying books. These books are of immense help not only for the teachers but also the students. The CBCS curriculum also includes a Skill Enhancement Course aimed at helping students to know what is manuscript, how to compose texts, how proof reading - translation works - script writing etc can be selected as future profession.
Every year Bengali department organizes different programs where both students and teachers participate actively. These programs are educational tours, lecture programs, wall magazine preparation, extempore speech competitions, reading competitions, college week rally, publishing departmental magazine , programs on sensitizing students for holistic development, such as visiting old age homes, orphanages etc. In such programs students participate actively which enhances participative & experiential learning.
