The Department of Political Science started since inception of college in the year 1971. It started its Pre- Degree Classes in 1975 and in 1981, Major was introduced. It is one of the leading Departments in the Arts Stream with a sizeable number of students opting for Political Science in the College. The Department offers Honours course in Political Science, and Generic Elective paper in Political Science for students from other disciplines.
The Department followed the annual system in U.G. till the year 2010 and started with the Semester system from the academic session 2011-12 with a revised syllabus focusing on the emerging areas in Political Science. Since 2019, the CBCS system has been introduced at both the Honours and Regular level courses.
The Department has contributed a lot towards teaching, learning and creating a positive and inclusive space for overall development of students. The Department has produced innumerable Graduates in Political Science. There are four sanctioned teaching posts in the department. The faculty members of the Department also mentor their students in groups and guide them in pursuing their academic goals in higher education. In order to develop extra-curricular skills among students, the Department organises various events such as Debate, Declamation and Quiz competitions, and invites eminent personalities and academicians to deliver lectures and discourses on contemporary issues.
The faculty members of the department also focus on developing diverse skills among students and help in inculcating good values like accountability, punctuality, participation and team spirit in various departmental activities. The Department believes that academic learning must be complemented by extra-curricular activities and the same is fulfilled by arranging field visits to places of significance, social get-togethers of the department, academic activities of the department, involvement in social activities through the NSS, NCC and the like. Wall magazine named ‘GANABIBEK’ is prepared by students of the department every year highlighting related issues and contemporary topics.
