The department of Economics was one of the few departments with which the college was established in 1971. In 1985-86, the department initiated honours courses in Economics. Presently the department offers B.A. Honours courses and B.A./B.Sc.Regular courses in Economics. Besides the department in collaboration with the department of Statistics and Mathematics are offering two value added courses to complement the curriculum with related skills and knowledge. This include Computer Basics and Mathematica for 2nd sem and Basic Statistics in Research Methodology with MS Excel and SPSS.
The founder Head of the department was Birendranath Sarma. Different teachers have rendered their services to the department which includes Mrs. Ranjana Sen, Dr. Deepak Goswami and Mr. Chandra Mohan Kalita. The present sanctioned faculty strength is four. Presently, Dr. Jublee Goswami, Pulak Mili, Nishibrata Hazarkia and Dr. Rumia Begum are rendering their services with utmost dedication for the upliftment of the students. Dr. Jublee Goswami is serving her second term as the Head, Department of Economics. Mr. Pulak Mili is also serving as the Associate NCC Officer of the college NCC Unit. Dr. Jublee Goswami is also serving as the present IQAC Coordinator.
The department has designed various innovative ways and methods for successful teaching learning process. This includes pre-planned teaching and evaluative plan, ICT enabled classes, surveys, group discussion and seminars.
The department has a computer lab with SPSS software and a rich departmental library for students benefit.
Another significant aspect of the department is its alumni who have successfully established themselves in different spheres. To cite a few examples, our alumni has successfully cleared NET, Bank Probationary Officers exam. A no. of them are engaged in corporate of repute. Most of our alumni have progressed for higher education every year. The alumni of the department deliberates to the students at various times on their career related issues.
