The department of Hindi was established in the year 1986. The first faculty member was Mr. Harmohan Das who was appointed as a part time teacher, after he left Ms. Shanti Thapa was appointed as a part time lecturer. In 1993 Ms. HiraBala Das joined as Lecturer. The department received Govt (DPI) concurrence up to degree level in 1995. Her post was converted to a sanctioned one under (converted GIA of govt of Assam) in 2003. Ms HiraBala Das retired in 2021. At present Dr. Moromi Roy Baruah is working as Assistant Professor cum HoD in the department. She joined her service in September, 2022. In UG level syllabus is prescribed by the Gauhati University
Hindi is a link language in our nation. So the students of Hindi get an opportunity to master in this language by studying it. It is also the language of a long literary tradition, both in modern prose and poetry as well as pre-modern secular and devotional poetry. The main objective of incorporating Hindi as a subject in the degree course is to create an interest among the students in the language and literature and also to master the art of communication. Since Hindi is the Official language of India so students should be motivated to study the language in order to develop a sense of consciousness regarding the language, its necessity, value and importance.
